Brain Tanned Buckskin, Full Hides Pronghorn Antelope
Brain Tanned Buckskin, Full Hides Pronghorn Antelope
I'm very excited to offer this product!
Hand scraped, brain tanned, and smoked by professional tanner Sam Smith, these hides are each truly works of art, ready for any craft! Historically, pronghorn antelope in the western states were likely used just as frequently as deer for buckskin, and according to Sam their skins are even better suited for it. Soft, stretchy, thin and super durable, this ancient material is a dream to work with. Now a dying craft, for thousands of years brain tan buckskin was used for garments. In my opinion, it reigns supreme as the most comfortable clothing "fabric." (As I write this, I'm working on some moccasins for my 1-year-old boy, and will soon make him and myself a pair of buckskin pants!)
Many hours go into the crafting of each hide, changing it from raw skin into this well preserved fabric-like leather just as it has been done for generations! After hours of stretching by hand to soften, the hides are pure white and are then smoked to preserve the softness and make them hand-washable. They will retain a pleasant smoky campfire aroma for a while, unless you wash them with soap and water.

Wow, braintan hides are hard to come by these days. Just not a lot of folks are willing to put in the painstaking effort to do it the traditional way, even though it results in a premium piece of heirloom leather.
And being done by one of the best Sam Smith!
I know for a fact Sam has studied hide tanning under the top tanners in the world and has put in the thousands of hours of experience to become an expert and it shows.
